programRussia and the
Baltics Featuring music of Arvo Pärt
Alan Heatherington, Music Director
Experience a musical trip to Russia and the Baltics at the CMS Spring concert on April 20 and 22. Musical jewels from Latvian, Lithuanian and Estonian composers, and diamonds by Russian masters from St. Petersburg, will contrast with new gems by living American composers, including three beloved spirituals.
The concert will feature sacred masterpieces by many of St. Petersburg’s best loved composers, including Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Rachmaninoff, Glazunov and Chesnokov. CMS will also perform sacred music by the very popular Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, along with music by other Baltic composers that is well known in the region but may be a new discovery for many American concert goers.
The American part of the program features some of today’s most popular composers such as Stephen Paulus and Eric Whitacre. Two world premieres will be performed, including a new work specially commissioned for Chicago Master Singers. It was composed by Wayland Rogers, a rising star among choral composers worldwide.
The a cappella concert will feature the same repertoire that CMS will take on tour to Latvia, Estonia and St. Petersburg next summer. The concert will feature soloists from the chorus.
